1st Emergency Room Visit!

Why is it that just when you think you have everything under control, something happens to throw you off your perfect game?  This is exactly what happens to me all the time!  Although what happened last weekend was an extreme case!  Don't worry all is fine now!

So it was Friday, and I wanted to just have a nice family night at home!  I went to Target at lunch and bought the Disney Tangled movie!  I knew it would be the perfect thing for all of us to watch and pop some popcorn.  So when I got home from work, the whole family ate dinner and went straight up stairs to get into some comfy PJ's.  We popped some popcorn and snuggled on the couch to start the movie.  I was ready to start my perfect night snuggled up with the kiddos!

About fifteen minutes into the movie things took a turn for the worse!  Zach is only fourteen months old so he was down on the floor playing a little while the movie was on.....

I think, first I need to tell you about our dog Rufus.  He is a seven year old mutt that we rescued from a farm, and he would never hurt a fly.  He is great with the kids and would lick just about anyone to death before he hurt anyone!

Zach is also at the stage where he thinks he is a much better walker then he really is.  Lets just say he tries to run but his feet don't go as fast as he would like them too!  So Rufus was enjoying a little snooze in front of the TV.  He was stretched completely out and practically snoring!  What happened next seemed like an eternity, but was really only seconds.

Zach was walking/running by and tripped.  His head smacked right into Rufus' belly as he was sound asleep all stretched out!  Rufus reacted according to his instincts and curled in and snipped at Zach.  The problem was that Rufus went for what had hit him in the stomach which in this case happened to be Zach's head.   Yes, you are assuming correctly Rufus bit Zach in the face.  It happened right in front of us and we were up on top of things as it was happening.  Rufus let go right away, and I scooped Zach up in my arms.  I was already yelling and in tears, I couldn't do anything but hold him.  I said to my husband "You have to look I can't do it!"  So he took Zach from me and told me it was bad but his eye was ok.  With that I gathered myself and took a look.

It was very, VERY close, but we were lucky his right eye appeared to be ok.  One tooth had broken the skin, and it was bleeding a lot!  We jumped up and were rushing to gather things to get to the hospital.  Big sister was freaking out as well as she was very upset at what had happened.  We ran upstairs and grabbed a few needed items.  I ran Mackenzie over to the neighbors house so that she would not have to sit and wait with us.

By the time we had Zach in the car seat, he was already done crying and smiling!  This was a great sign, he is so tough!  He was doing way better then mommy at this point.   We are lucky to have a small Children's hospital three miles up the road.  We were there in a flash and fortunately it wasn't busy.  The staff their was nothing short of fantastic.  They had him all fixed up and out of there in 45 minutes!  Zach ended up with 3 stitches just below his eye.
Zach was back to normal the next day!

We got home and picked up big sister from next door.  We decided to go back down an try and watch a little more of the movie and cuddle up to finish what we had started.  Zach was extremely tired, which was expected, and I took him up to bed!  Mackenzie made it to the end of the movie, of course and fell asleep as soon as it was over.

Once they were both in bed mommy lost it!  I couldn't stop crying.  I couldn't stop seeing the event happen over and over again in my head.  I laid in bed that night just staring at the celling.  My heart raced for a couple of hours just thinking about it.

I know that there are going to be other things in our family that will happen.  Wow, this was hard and really had me freaked out.  I can't imagine going through another situation even close to this!  Three simple stitches had me so upset.  How will I ever deal with anything bigger then this?  I guess I should just consider myself lucky to have a 3 1/2 and 1 year old, and this being my first visit to the hospital!

I think one of the nurses said it best at the hospital, "It really is harder on the parents, then the kids!"  This is probably because Zach just fussed a little getting his stitches and mommy cried like a baby!  Let's just help we don't head to the hospital anytime soon because I don't want to ever go through that again!

  1. I think it does hurt the parents more than the child. Poor baby! Kids heal quickly though, so it should be gone (or almost gone) by Easter!
